FRAN STARZEC, CP
CERTIFIED PRACTITIONER
I began my journey into prosthetics in 1976. I was a clinical assistant at Kerr Orthotic and Prosthetic Associates in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Jan Stokosa was the consulting prosthetist and I was assigned to assist him with patients.
From the beginning I could see Jan was very different from other clinicians I had worked with. He had a greater thirst and drive to achieve the best outcomes possible for his patients and was always developing new and improved systems to achieve the patients’ goals. In short order I knew he was the person I wanted to teach me the skills needed as a Prosthetist.
I asked Jan if he would teach me. In the spring of 1978 I moved to Lansing, to advance my career with Jan Stokosa at the Institute for the Advancement of Prosthetics (IAP). For three years I was his clinical assistant and I had responsibilities to learn Prosthesis fabrication procedures in the laboratory.
I attended the University of Minnesota Department of Orthopedic Surgery Prosthetic Practitioner Program. I returned to serve a two-year residency with Jan and became a staff Prosthetist.
In 1987, to spread my wings a bit, I and two other IAP staff members left to open our own clinic – The Prosthetic Center Inc., in Lansing. Over the next five years we built a successful practice.
In 1993 I returned to practice with Jan Stokosa at Stokosa Prosthetic Clinic in Okemos where I still practice today. I enjoy being part of a team with the goal of making the maximum contribution to the lives of people who require external extremity prostheses. Through the years I have been fortunate to be involved with helping develop fitting processes that incorporate the newest relevant technologies which provide improved comfort, mobility and function for our patients.
I am board certified with the American Board for Certification in Prosthetics and a member of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists.
My wife, Cindy, and I have been happily married for thirty-two years, and together we raised four children: Robert, 31; Julia, 28; Nicholas, 26; and James, 25.
In my leisure time I enjoy fishing, golf, gardening and playing with my three grandchildren.
